Amazon.com Inc unveiled a new hiring spree on Monday ahead of a visit by President Barack Obama to one of the Internet retailer's giant distribution warehouses this week.
Amazon said it is looking to fill more than 5,000 new full-time jobs at 17 of its fulfillment centers across the United States. That's roughly a 25 percent increase in full-time fulfillment center staff, which currently number more than 20,000 in the country.
Amazon has been building lots of new fulfillment centers closer to customers in recent years as the company tries to speed up delivery of online orders and reduce shipping costs.
Amazon needs a lot of workers to pick, pack and ship orders alongside high tech robots that whiz around its warehouses. The company's demand for employees is so strong that it has created special programs to woo candidates.
Last year, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos used the front page of the company's website to announce a Career Choice program that pays thousands of dollars for warehouse employees to take technical and vocational courses in high-demand areas including engineering, information technology, transportation and accounting.
Amazon made its latest hiring push as President Obama is due to visit a company fulfillment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Tuesday to speak about jobs in the United States.
The President will discuss proposals to jumpstart private sector job growth and make America more competitive, according to a White House spokeswoman.

KIDAL, Mali (AP) ? The United Nations peacekeepers deployed here did their best to paint over independence slogans emblazoned on the concrete wall surrounding one of the main polling stations in this contested city, the epicenter of last year's rebellion against Malian rule. The white paint they used wasn't thick enough though, and the slogans were still legible to the voters who lined up outside.
"Mali is the cause of our problems," said one. "Why should we remain colonized when we have all we need to be independent?" said another of the dozens of slogans.
Only a timid trickle of residents in Kidal, a city at the feet of the Sahara desert, showed up to vote Sunday in Mali's first presidential election since last year's coup and subsequent rebellion.
Those voting in Kidal are among a minority of people in this vast province, spanning an area the size of Iowa, who recognize Mali as their legitimate ruler. And even those who chose to come with the intention of voting were often unable to cast their ballots because of the various technical glitches which have plagued the hastily-organized poll.
The vote is meant to be a new beginning for a country that was once an example of democracy in West Africa. But officials fear that the legitimacy of the election will be undermined by low voter turnout, technical lapses that prevent people from voting, and the contested status of Kidal where the rebels remain in control of numerous government buildings. The lapses, some fear, could lead to a new rebellion.
Mohamed Ag Sidi squatted on the ground and tried to find his name on the voter list outside one polling booth in Kidal. The metallic door on which the list had been posted was torn down overnight by the punishing desert wind, and election officials had put the torn pieces of paper on the floor, held in place by rocks. In the rush to hold the election, the government printed voter ID cards with only the name of the voter and not the address of the polling station where they're expected to vote.
A 64-year-old woman arrived at the secondary school that serves as a vote bureau well before the opening time, and unlike many others, found her name on the list. She was assigned to Polling Station No. 3. But after traipsing across the complex, she failed to find No. 3, and could only find No. 2 and No. 4.
"I know only of the nation of Mali, and that's why I came to vote," said the woman, Fatina Walet Alitine, a member of the Tuareg ethnic group, whose members have led four rebellions against the state in the past half-century.
She pointed to a group of young Tuareg men who were loitering inside the grounds of the polling station, all members of the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad, or NMLA, the separatist movement that launched the most recent rebellion last year, seizing and briefly holding a France-sized chunk of northern Mali, which they declared was the new Tuareg nation of Azawad.
"See them?" she said. "They don't like this. They told us not to vote. They told me that if I vote, they will break my arms. So I said, 'Well, then you better break my arms.'"
Overnight, the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, one of the al-Qaida-linked groups which seized part of Mali's north on the heels of the Tuareg separatists, said they planned to attack polling stations, according to the Nouakchott Information Agency, a Mauritanian website used by the jihadists to post messages.
The Tuareg rebellion set off a chain reaction of events which plunged the country into ruin. Soldiers in the faraway capital, angered by the government's inept handling of the north, mutinied, overthrowing the democratically elected President Amadou Toumani Toure in a March 2012 coup. The country has been without a legitimate leader since then, and the election Sunday is supposed to return the nation to constitutional rule.
A total of 6.8 million people registered to vote in this West African nation of nearly 15 million. They are choosing from 28 candidates on the ballot, including veteran politician Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, known by his initials IBK, who was both a former prime minister and ex-president of the country's parliament. Other top contenders include Soumaila Cisse, an ex-finance minister and the current head of the West African Monetary Union, as well as Dramane Dembele, the candidate of the country's largest political party.
In the southern portions of the country including in the capital, voter turnout appeared to be far higher, reflecting the north-south split which has bedeviled Mali since its independence from France 53 years ago. It was then that the Tuaregs, the lighter-skinned nomads of the north, petitioned their colonial ruler, asking to be granted their own territory separate from the rest of Mali. They pointed to the linguistic, cultural and racial differences which have long made them different from the black ethnic groups that make up the Malian majority, said Ambeiry Ag Rhissa, the acting head of the NMLA rebel movement in Kidal.
"We had nothing in common with Bamako," he said, referring to Mali's capital located 950 miles (1,500 kilometers) away to the south. "We have been stepped on, we have been humiliated, we have been vexed, we have been massacred by the Malians," Ag Rhissa said.
"Our nomadic people have lost all hope that they will ever be listened to," he said.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Research so far has not found obvious advantages to minimally invasive surgery involving just one cut, according to a leading organization of women's doctors.
Although single incision surgeries have become more popular in recent years, the evidence does not show they are any better for patients' health than other minimally invasive procedures, said Dr. Jessica Shepherd, one of the authors of the report from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
"The one benefit that it does have is improved cosmesis," or cosmetic appearance of the surgery site, said Shepherd, who is the director of minimally invasive gynecology at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System in Chicago.
"Cosmetic benefit is still really important for women," she told Reuters Health.
Single incisions can be used for a variety of procedures, including removing the fallopian tubes, uterus, uterine fibroids or other masses, repairing a protruding vagina and "tying" a woman's fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy.
It's not clear just how often single incision procedures are performed, but Shepherd said their increased use prompted ACOG to review the evidence on whether they are any better than conventional approaches to minimally invasive surgery.
Minimally invasive surgery, also called laparoscopy, typically involves several small cuts.
"The thought is, if you have one incision the pain will be less and cosmesis is potentially much better," said Dr. Ally Murji, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at the University of Toronto and Mt. Sinai Hospital in Ontario, Canada.
But as the ACOG Committee on Gynecologic Practice found, there are very little data backing up the idea that women's pain is reduced when surgery involves just one cut.
Two studies did find some reduction in pain among women who had single site surgery, compared to those who underwent a standard minimally invasive procedure, whereas two other studies did not find any differences in women's reports of pain.
"The data that we do have from the pain aspect really (don't) show that single incision laparoscopy is superior at this point in time compared to conventional laparoscopy. It's probably equivalent," said Murji, who did not participate in the ACOG report.
He said the ACOG committee, who published their report in Obstetrics & Gynecology, did a thorough job of assessing the single site technique.
One analysis by Murji and his colleagues earlier this year found that single incision surgery appears to be just as safe as surgeries with several incisions.
"The disadvantages (are) it's technically much more challenging, and second is it does take more time than conventional laparoscopy, likely because it is more difficult to accomplish," he told Reuters Health.
A third drawback to the technique, Murji added, is that it could cost more if surgical tools have to be modified - although Shepherd said the same instrumentation can be used and the cost should not be any different.
Shepherd's group called for more research, particularly large studies comparing traditional minimally invasive surgery to single site operations.
In the meantime, having more surgical options available for women is a good thing, she said.
"We want to promote women knowing their options and being able to choose what's available," Shepherd said.
Murji agreed.
"I am optimistic and I'm encouraged that women have more of a choice," he said.
"But I caution that just because we can do something through a single incision surgery doesn't mean that we should be doing it. And we really have to see, is it beneficial before we begin offering it to everybody."

WASHINGTON Large cities in the U.S. are significantly safer than their rural counterparts, with the risk of injury death more than 20 percent higher in the country. A study to be published online tomorrow in Annals of Emergency Medicine upends a common perception that urban areas are more dangerous than small towns ("Safety in Numbers: Are Major Cities the Safest Places in the U.S.?").
"Cars, guns and drugs are the unholy trinity causing the majority of injury deaths in the U.S.," said lead study author Sage Myers, MD, MSCE, of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. "Although the risk of homicide is higher in big cities, the risk of unintentional injury death is 40 percent higher in the most rural areas than in the most urban. And overall, the rate of unintentional injury dwarfs the risk of homicide, with the rate of unintentional injury more than 15 times that of homicide among the entire population. This has important implications about staffing of emergency departments and trauma care systems in rural areas, which tend to be underserved as it is."
Analyzing 1,295,919 injury deaths that occurred between 1999 and 2006, researchers determined that the risk of injury death was 22 percent higher in the most rural counties than in the most urban. The most common causes of injury death were motor vehicle crashes, leading to 27.61 deaths per 100,000 people in most rural areas and 10.58 per 100,000 in most urban areas. Though the risk of firearm-related death showed no difference across the rural-urban spectrum in the entire population as a whole, when age subgroups were studied, firearm-related deaths were found to be significantly higher in rural areas for children and people 45 years and older; however, for people age 20 to 44, the risk of firearm-related death was significantly lower in rural areas.
Race was also a factor. Rural counties with large black populations had significantly lower risk of injury death than those with small black populations. The opposite was true for Latino populations: Rural counties with large Latino populations had significantly higher risk of injury death than rural counties with small Latino populations.
Surprisingly, rural counties with the highest levels of college-educated inhabitants and median income had significantly increased risk of injury death compared to rural counties with the lowest levels of each.
"By digging deep into the data, we may be able to tailor injury prevention efforts to the populations that need them, such as seniors in cities who are more likely to fall and rural children who are more likely to drown," said Dr. Myers. "This data is relevant to staffing issues as well. Injury-related mortality risk is highest in the areas least likely to be covered by emergency physicians and least likely to have access to trauma care, which argues for using a population-planning approach to improve emergency and trauma care systems in the U.S."

Unity 4.2 has arrived
After months of development and testing, Unity 4.2 is here and ready for you to use.
As well as a host of new and exciting features, the latest version of the 4.x cycle introduces a number of important licensing changes, all designed to make as many great Unity features available to as many people as possible. Let's quickly review the goodies that Unity 4.2 brings to the world.
New platforms
Unity 4.2 comes with three new platforms: Windows Phone 8, Windows Store apps and BlackBerry 10. That's right, we've doubled the number of mobile platforms Unity supports! Now it's up to you guys to create new games and port existing titles to these platforms so even more people can benefit from your creative talents.
In Unity 4.2, all users of the free version of Unity can publish to any mobile platform they wish, be it Windows Phone 8, Windows Store, iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 without it costing a dime. In addition, Unity Pro users can use the Windows Store Pro deployment option (which includes the Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store apps platforms) absolutely free of charge.
Plus, Unity Pro users can benefit from advanced Unity features when deploying their iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 projects by purchasing Unity iOS Pro, Android Pro or BlackBerry 10 Pro Add-On products from the Unity Store.
More free tech
We've decided to make a number of existing Unity Pro features available to users of the free version of Unity:
Realtime shadows (one-directional light only; hard shadows only).
Text-based serialization of materials, prefabs, scenes etc. for easier version control.
NavMesh baking (OffMeshLinks still require Pro).
Now, games created using the free version of Unity can benefit from realtime shadows and game actors navigating intelligently. In addition, as a developer using the free version of Unity you can cooperate with your colleagues using any version control system, because text-based serialization no longer requires a Unity Pro license.
Features and changes
So, what great new features does Unity 4.2 have to offer? Let's take a high-level overview:
Graphics
OpenGL ES 3.0 support for Android:
ES3 has nicer shadow filtering, ETC2 texture compression, GPU skinning via transform feedback, HDR rendering, multiple render targets, derivative instructions in shaders etc.
Requires an ES3-compatible GPU, for example Qualcomm Adreno 3xx or ARM Mali T6xx.
Note that the official Android version does not support ES3 yet. So to test it you should install ES3 drivers directly from the GPU makers (e.g. Qualcomm).
GPU Skinning (requires Unity Pro)
Completely automatic, no custom shaders needed.
Works on DirectX 11 (via stream-out), OpenGL ES 3.0 (via transform feedback) and Xbox 360 (via memexport). Other platforms will continue to use CPU skinning.
Optimized and updated Image Effects
Stencil buffer access (requires Unity Pro). Shaders can define stencil buffer operations, for optimizations or special effects.
Static & dynamic batching for shadow casters & shadow collector pass. Note: many shadow casters can be batched even if they use different materials! They will be batched as long as the actual shadow caster shader & material properties affecting them are the same.
Shuriken Collision Event Callback Scripting Interface: Efficient callbacks on GameObjects and Particle Systems are issued when Shuriken particle collisions occur. Per particle callback data includes collision positions, incident velocities, surface normals and Collider references. Use this feature to can cause damage to GameObjects and apply forces to rigidbodies.
Editor
Integrated version control support for Perforce.
Perform common Perforce operations right inside the Unity editor (requires a Team License).
We've made the integrated version control system extensible; support for more VCS will be coming later. Or you can write your own VCS plugin, see our plugin page on github.
Platform switching, player building and asset importing can now be cancelled! How cool is that?
Custom Game View resolutions and aspect ratios: Custom settings are saved per project for easy sharing through version control (ProjectSettings/GameViewSizes.asset).
Preset Libraries: Create new libraries either as personal libraries (saved in preferences) or shared libraries (saved in the project folder). You can now save the following types as presets:
Curves in the Curve Editor and Particle System Curve Editor.
Gradients in the Gradient Editor.
Colors in the Color Picker.
Memory Profiler: Now shows objects' references to other loaded objects. This can help pinpoint why a given object is in memory.
Shader Importer: now with default textures specified. When you initially set a shader on a material or reset a material the textures will be set to these default textures.
Texture Importer: The new Alpha is Transparency setting performs color dilation to fix edge artifacts on semi-transparent textures. It is enabled by default for GUI textures.
Editor extensions can now get a callback when Unity is about to open an asset. Use this callback to open an asset inside Unity before it's opened in an external tool. Decorate a static method with the attribute UnityEditor.Callbacks.OnOpenAsset.
Mobile
Deferred Lighting is now enabled on Android and iOS.
Android: Added support for Android Library Projects (no compilation support, so the libraries have to be pre-compiled).
Android: AndroidJavaProxy ? Support for implementing Java interfaces in C#.
Android: The editor can now update the Android SDK if it does not match the required dependencies.
iOS: Added CrashReporter API for crash detection and extraction (requires Unity Pro).
iOS: Set up iOS Player Settings and texture import overrides and build iOS AssetBundles from the Windows Editor. Building an actual iOS player still requires Mac OS X & Xcode.
Editor: When in mobile graphics emulation mode, the editor will show a warning when RenderTexture usage is not optimal for tile-based or multi-GPU systems.
Audio
Added Bypass Listener and Bypass Reverb Zones. Use these features to turn off listener effects independently from the effects on the audio source. Thus, Bypass Effects only turns off the effects on the AudioSource, and the 3 flags can be combined freely.
Added Disable Audio property in Audio project settings to deactivate the audio system in standalone builds. Note that this also affects the audio of MovieTextures. In the editor the audio system is still on and will support previewing audio clips, but AudioSource.Play calls and playOnAwake will not be handled in order to simulate behavior of the standalone build.
Added Prepare iOS For Recording in Player Settings (iOS > Other Settings in the inspector). Turning it on will avoid the stalls that otherwise happen when starting or stopping the Microphone object.
Linux, Mac and Mecanim
Linux: Added basic webcam support for video4linux2-supported devices.
Linux: Implement headless player; this will not require Xlib (requires Unity Pro).
Mac OS X: 64 bit standalone player support (x86_64 and Universal).
Mecanim: Avatar Creation API for avatar creation from scripts at runtime or in the editor.
Mecanim: Synchronized Layers option to override state durations.
Mecanim: You can now set the default layer weight in the editor for your animator controller layer.
Many thanks to all the thousands of users who have participated in the Unity 4.2 alpha and beta program. Without your work in suggesting improvements and reporting bugs Unity wouldn't be the polished product it is today.
This is just a brief introduction to a few of the changes and improvements in Unity 4.2. See the Unity 4.2 release notes for indepth information about the myriad new features and fixes the latest version of the Unity 4.x cycle has to offer. We can't wait to see what you make with it!

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A study released on Monday by University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Est?e Lauder Companies Inc. shows that people who don?t get enough sleep at night are more likely to have poorer skin health and skin that ages more quickly.
Preliminary results? of the clinical trial, which took place at UH?s Skin Study Center in 2012 and was paid for by Est?e Lauder, were originally shared at the International Investigative Dermatology Meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland in May.
Researchers say the study is the first to conclusively demonstrate the link between lack of sleep and skin damage.
We all know that constant all-nighters for school or work leaves us looking haggard the next morning. And more and more evidence is showing that a good night?s sleep is essential for our health. Skimp on it and you?re at risk for high blood pressure, gaining weight. If you don?t get good quality sleep, you could be susceptible to metabolic diseases, gastrointestinal orders and other conditions.
With an interest in seeing if lack of sleep damages one?s skin, Est?e Lauder?s research division turned to UH.
Sixty women, all pre-menopausal between ages 30-49, were in one of two groups ? good sleepers and poor sleepers (those getting less than five or fewer hours), as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.
Among the study results:
*The intrinsic age score (natural aging) for poor quality sleepers was twice as high as that for good sleepers. The higher the age, the more evidence of fine lines, loss of facial skin elasticity and other signs of aging.
*While there wasn?t any significant difference in the two groups in terms of extrinsic aging (damage to the skin from external factors such as smoking and the sun), the skin of good quality sleepers recovered more quickly from environmental stressors to the skin such as sunburn.
*Poor sleepers showed a higher rate of water loss in the skin, an indication that the skin?s ability to act as a barrier may be damaged.
Not surprisingly, the women who got enough sleep had a better self image than their sleepy counterparts. Of the study participants, poor quality sleepers were more likely than good quality sleepers to be obese (44 percent vs 23 percent).
?We think that poor sleepers are holding onto inflammation a lot longer,? said Dr. Elma Baron, director of UH?s Skin Study Center and the principal investigator of the study.
?We want that skin to be restored.?
Baron, who also is associate professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, has collaborated with Est?e Lauder on previous skin studies.
?We don?t know how long it would take before someone?s [skin] can recover from [the damage caused by] being a poor sleeper,? Baron said. ?We definitely want to restore the skin health. We just don?t know how long it would take for these physiological changes.?
When asked what new products are being developed based on the findings at UH, Est?e Lauder?s executive director of global research and development-skin biology declined to provide details.
?Over the years we have become an expert in products that help remove internal damage in the cells,? said Dr. Nadine Pernodet. ?We?re going to do more related research.?

In one of Team Obama?s trademark Friday afternoon specials, Secretary of State John Kerry announced last week that his six rounds of shuttle diplomacy had resulted in an agreement to reconvene Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.? As usual, the timing was appropriate for an initiative designed to garner favorable headlines, but that doesn?t stand up to scrutiny.
It appears that Kerry has bought this ?breakthrough? by bullying Israel into making further concessions to its Palestinian enemies, even before the talks begin.? In exchange for nothing more than the Palestinians? agreement-in-principle to resume them, the Israelis will release some number of additional convicted terrorists.? Never mind that the ones left in Israeli jails after numerous previous releases are, by and large, those who have most successfully and murderously attacked innocent civilians in the Jewish State.
If the Israelis once again pay this price, they must expect the same results as before: More hardened criminals unleashed to wage jihad against Israel ? and against any Palestinians that might actually wish to make peace with her.
The rapturous public welcome routinely accorded these terrorists makes clear that it is such war-mongers, not the peace-makers, who are blessed in the radicalized West Bank.? That is even more true in Gaza, where few defy the despotic and virulently anti-Israel dictates of the Muslim Brotherhood?s Palestinian franchise: the designated terrorist organization, Hamas.
For that reason, among many others, notwithstanding Kerry?s ego-driven pursuit of negotiations, his purported ?breakthrough? cannot produce real progress towards a genuine peace.? And inevitably, pressure will begin to mount all over again for further Israeli concessions.
This pattern was evident in the immediate aftermath of the latest Friday afternoon special.? Unidentified Palestinian officials promptly put out the word that Secretary Kerry had, as The Blaze reported, given ?Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas a letter guaranteeing that new peace negotiations with Israel will be based on pre-1967 borders.?
Israeli officials, including prominent politicians in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s ruling coalition, have responded sharply.? They deny any agreement to use as the basis for these talks a return to the indefensible territorial boundaries that have aptly been called ?Auschwitz borders.?? So, the new negotiations may founder before they begin.
But let?s engage in a thought-experiment.? Just for the purpose of discussion, consider what would happen if Israel did agree to surrender territory on the West Bank and Golan Heights that provides a modicum of strategic depth to the otherwise incredibly vulnerable Jewish State?
One need look no further than the emerging correlation of forces arrayed against Israel.? The unmistakable reality is that it is facing the prospect for the first time in a generation of actual or prospective enemies on every side, including potentially devastating attacks from the sea.
O The most populous Arab state, Egypt, is convulsed by domestic unrest and a volatile confrontation between Islamists sworn to destroy Israel and a military that, in the past, has repeatedly tried to do so.? The two nations? cold peace, enforced for decades by a demilitarized Sinai, is jeopardized as that desert peninsula is increasingly populated by al Qaeda and other jihadists itching to attack Israelis.
O Syria is wracked by civil war in which the ultimate victory of either Iranian/Hezbollah-backed Bashir Assad or the Muslim Brotherhood-al Qaeda alliance is likely to pose new threats to the long quiet, but now restive, Golan Heights.? U.S. arming of the so-called ?rebels? may or may not assure their triumph.? But it will surely increase the danger that faction poses to Israel.
O Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are in various stages of destabilization at the hands of Islamists of assorted stripes.? Turkey is in the hands of a particularly dangerous one, Recep Tayyep Erdogan, who makes no secret of his hostility towards Israel and solidarity with its enemies.? And the Islamic Republic of Iran is continuing to build the capacity to deliver an existential nuclear threat to Israel.
O As the brilliant strategic analyst and author Mark Helprin pointed out in the Wall Street Journal last weekend (), Israel can no longer take comfort in the ?qualitative edge? in conventional armaments that previously enabled it to contend with numerically superior enemies:? ?Saudi Arabia?s air force (soon 380 combat aircraft, primarily F-15s) is rapidly gaining on Israel (441 combat aircraft) in quantity and quality. Were the Saudis to take a Muslim-solidarity time-out with Iran and join Egypt, Syria and perhaps even Turkey to defeat Israel in an air war, it would mean Israel?s death.?
In short, this is no time for the U.S. government to be demanding that its most important, self-reliant and reliable ally in the Middle East make territorial concessions that will render it more vulnerable to attack from one, or more, of the aforementioned quarters.? That is especially so given that such concessions have no prospect of translating into an enduring peace with all, or even most, of the Palestinians.
It is neither in the Israelis? interest nor our own that they weaken themselves further in the face of the region?s burgeoning shariah-driven religio-politico-cultural dynamic, one that is feeding their enemies? unrequited ambition to ?drive the Jews into the sea.?
John Kerry?s vainglorious diplomacy has thus far done nothing to mitigate that dynamic.? If anything, his sympathies and those of President Obama towards the Muslim Brotherhood are feeding it.? We must not permit such folly to continue to intensify Israel?s peril, and our own.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) ? A tea party challenger signaled on Monday that he intends to take on Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell in next year's GOP primary in Kentucky.
Louisville businessman Matt Bevin's entry into the race would force a major shift in the McConnell campaign, which has been concentrating entirely on Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky's 34-year-old secretary of state.
Bevin is scheduled to announce his plans on Wednesday at the state Capitol in Frankfort. Sarah Durand, a tea party activist and aide to Bevin, hinted at his political intentions Monday when she distributed a media advisory announcing that he would begin a three-day statewide tour after the announcement.
McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said the 46-year-old Bevin, a partner in the Louisville investment firm Waycross Partners, would be "nothing more than nuisance" if he runs.
University of Louisville political scientist Laurie Rhodebeck said she doesn't think Bevin can be dismissed so easily.
"Bevin is going to be more than a pesky distraction to Sen. McConnell," Rhodebeck said. She said McConnell is "going to have to spend money and time on the primary, and it's clear he'd much rather be attacking Grimes right now."
Benton said McConnell "will keep his focus where it belongs: working hard for Kentucky every day." He said the campaign team will have no problem dealing with both Bevin and Grimes.
Democrats hope that McConnell is forced to deplete his campaign account in the primary. He has nearly $10 million left of the $15 million he's raised for his re-election bid.
"I think Sen. McConnell clearly has a problem within his own party," said Jonathan Hurst, a political adviser to Grimes. "Republicans not only in Washington, but right here in Kentucky, are tired of his obstruction."
Sen. Rand Paul, the tea party Republican who is considering a presidential bid in 2016, said Monday he thinks tea party candidates should focus on open seats. Paul, who has endorsed McConnell for re-election, also said he thinks McConnell will win both the primary and general elections next year.
"I'm not giving him encouragement or discouragement," Paul said of Bevin. "It's a free country, and anybody who wants to run can."

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A German roller coaster maker is sending officials to a North Texas amusement park to inspect a ride after a woman fell to her death.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Gerstlauer Amusement Rides in Munsterhausen, Germany, will investigate what led to Friday's accident at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington.
Witnesses said the woman expressed concern about the coaster's safety bar not completely engaging as the ride was starting.
But a project manager for Gerstlauer, Tobias Lindnar, said the company has never had problems with car safety bars on any of the roughly 50 roller coasters it's built around the world over the past 30 years.
Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker said the victim died after falling from the 14-story Texas Giant roller coaster, but she wouldn't give specifics.
