This LDS Military Wife: Family Home Evening: Scriptures

One thing I think that is getting lost in this "Mormon Moment" as people across the globe now watch as a tight race between our current president and Mitt Romney is coming to a close, is what our former Prophet Gordon B. Hinkley called, "...the great strength of this church." What is THE great strength? He answers this when he says, ?"It is the emphasis which we place on families."

And how much emphasis is placed on the family in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? So much so that we have one day a week devoted to the family. And guess what? ?It's not Sunday! Although we do keep Sunday very family oriented as well.?

Monday Nights are used for what we call "Family Home Evening" or "FHE."?

Gordon B. Hinkley explained this further, "We have a?family?home evening program once a week [Monday night] across the Church in which parents sit down with their children. They study the scriptures. They talk about family problems. They plan family activities and things of that kind. I don?t hesitate to say if every family in the world practiced that one thing, you?d see a very great difference in the solidarity of the families of the world"

We believe this is expected of the Lord. This does NOT mean that we neglect our family the rest of the week. Far from it. We are expected to have daily family scripture study and prayers. FHE is a day set aside where all other activities are put aside for a special emphasis on the family unit.?

FHE is all about family bonding. Creating those strong ties that we believe last throughout eternity.?

FHE should be fun and something everyone enjoys.?

This week we are starting to use the Nursery Lesson Manual as a guide for our FHE.?

My greatest responsibility is helping my children gain their own relationship with Jesus Christ. I love FHE. I love the focus of the family that comes with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Successful families do not happen on accident or by some stroke of luck. It takes work, it takes effort and focus.?
