The sport of horse racing goes back a long, long way. It goes back to circa 4,500 BC when nomadic Central Asian tribes domesticated horses for the first time. Ever after, horse-racing has reigned supreme as a sport fit for Kings.

From degeneration to regeneration: Advances in skeletal muscle engineering
ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A study published today in BioMed Central?s open access journal Skeletal Muscle reports of a new therapeutic technique to repair and rebuild muscle for sufferers of degenerative muscle disorders. The therapy brings together two existing techniques for muscle repair ? cell transplantation and tissue engineering ? specifically, mesoangioblast stem cells delivered via a hydrogel cell-carrier matrix.
A number of conditions can lead to considerable degeneration or loss of skeletal muscle and, since skeletal muscle has a limited capacity for self repair, therapies for muscle reconstruction or regeneration are often necessary. There are currently two ways to rebuild muscle: cell transplantation, whereby stem cells are injected directly into the muscle or arteries, and tissue engineering, whereby cells are embedded on a biomaterial scaffold to reconstruct a whole muscle.
Stem cell transplantation on its own can be limited by poor cell survival, but the authors hoped that the technique in combination with tissue engineering could increase the chances of efficacy for localized disorders of muscle.
The research team, comprised of researchers from institutions all over Europe, embedded Mab cells within a polyethylene glycol and fibrinogen (PF) hydrogel scaffold that has a proven track record in tissue and cardiac engineering. The Mab/PF grafts were then injected into mice, directly into the chronically inflamed and sclerotic regions typical of the advanced stages of muscular dystrophy. The team observed increased engraftment and survival of Mabs when injected with PF than with Mabs suspended in saline solution.
Five weeks after treatment, analyses revealed that Mabs had better integrated into regenerating muscle fibers when used with a PF carrier than when used without. In addition, there was better organization of muscle fibers when Mabs was used in combination with PF.
Lead author Cesare Gargioli commented, ?This study demonstrates a novel tissue engineering approach that is capable of producing enriched donor cell engraftment into skeletal muscle after an acute injury or in more-difficult-to-treat advanced-stage muscular dystrophy. Both Mabs and PF are currently undergoing separate clinical trials, but their combined use may increase efficacy for sufferers with more localized forms of muscular dystrophy or disorders that lead to damage of skeletal muscle, including hernias and sphincter disorders.?

We all know we should be eating five portions of fruit and veg a day to stay in good health, but it seems most of us are either failing to achieve this ? or have strange ideas about what fruits and vegetables actually count.
Chips, for example, do not count. Though, according to a new survey by Sainsburys, almost a quarter of Brits believe they do. And a further quarter also suggested eating five of the same fruit or veg meets daily recommendations.
But all the promotion around the five-a-day campaign hasn?t fallen on deaf ears. The vast majority of us (85 per cent) know that we really should be eating a good mix of fruit and veg daily, and why. But in practice 70 per cent of us just don?t manage it.
The survey also revealed that a third of parents are so concerned their kids eat enough, they forget about their own tally. Other excuses included not having time to wolf down five portions of fruits and veg every single day and that these foods are just too expensive.
To help us (and hopefully to make us feel less guilty when our total number?s a measly one or two), the Government has launched the ?Responsibility Deal? calling on food producers to make it clear when pre-packaged food contains one or more portions that count towards the five-a-day and to provide a wider range of healthy options for consumers.
Fruit and vegetables
And to clear things up, here is the Government advice on what counts towards five-a-day:
? Fresh fruit and vegetables.
? Frozen fruit and vegetables.
? Tinned or canned fruit and vegetables. Buy the ones tinned in natural juice or water, with no added sugar or salt.
? Dried fruit, such as currants, dates, sultanas and figs.
? Fruit and vegetables cooked in dishes such as soups, stews or pasta dishes.
? A glass (150ml) of unsweetened 100 per cent fruit or vegetable juice. Juice counts as a maximum of one portion a day, however much you drink. That?s mainly because juice contains less fibre than whole fruits and vegetables.
? A smoothie containing all of the edible pulped fruit and/or vegetable may count as more than one portion but this depends on how it?s made. Smoothies count as up to a maximum of two portions per day.
? Beans and pulses. These only count as one portion a day, no matter how many you eat. That?s because they contain fewer nutrients than other fruits and vegetables.
? Fruit and veg in convenience foods, such as ready meals and shop-bought pasta sauces, soups and puddings. Some ready-made foods are high in salt, sugar and fat, so only have them occasionally or in small amounts. You can find the salt, sugar and fat content of ready-made foods on the label.

U.S. trucker nabbed with ammo in Mexico is freed
EL PASO, Texas (AP) ? A Dallas trucker imprisoned for seven months in Mexico on accusations that he tried to smuggle assault rifle ammunition into the country broke down in tears Friday when he returned to the U.S., saying he had at times given up hope.
Jabin Bogan maintains he was on his way to Phoenix to deliver the ammunition in April when he took a wrong highway exit and accidentally crossed the border into Mexico. Despite his insistence it was an honest mistake, the 27-year-old was arrested and taken to a Mexican maximum security prison.
"Some days I gave up hope. Some days I felt like God was, to be honest in my heart, like God was laughing. Like he was just punishing me for no reason. I felt like just giving up," he said during a brief news conference in El Paso shortly after arriving back in the U.S.
Bogan tearfully thanked his supporters, and said that at times he felt like taking his own life or someone else's.
"I was the only black American person in the whole prison. God brought me through and I made it," he said.
Bogan was released from the Mexican prison last week but had been detained by immigration authorities until Friday. He was found guilty of possession of military ammunition and sentenced to three years, but the ruling was later commuted for time served and a fine.
He was arrested on April 17 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, just across the border from El Paso. Bogan said he was headed to Phoenix when he got lost, and he told Mexican authorities that a law enforcement officer at the border had told him to continue driving across the international bridge.
Bogan said he attempted to turn back when he realized he had crossed into Mexico, but the layout of the traffic lanes prevented him from returning without first crossing into the truck inspection area in Juarez, where his truck was searched.
He said Friday that when he acknowledged to the agents he had ammunition, "they said, 'in this side of the country it's illegal to have bullets.' And that's when everything went upside down they took me in and never let me out."
During his trial, Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claim that Bogan had 268,000 bullets hidden under the floorboards of his 18-wheeler's trailer when he was arrested. Agents testified in June that Bogan was trying to make a U-turn back into the U.S. when they found the ammunition bundled on top of wooden pallets inside the trailer.
Bogan was arrested less than 100 feet from a giant billboard that reads, "no more weapons." The sign, unveiled by Mexican President Felipe Calderon two months before Bogan was caught, was made out of seized high-caliber rifles and ammunition.
Calderon has blamed lax U.S. gun laws for the flow of weapons into Mexico.
An appeal filed in August by Bogan's lawyer in Mexico, Emilio de la Rosa, reduced the charge from smuggling to possession of military ammunition. That allowed Bogan to be released after serving a portion of his sentence and paying a fine. He also was sentenced to supervised release, which he can do by mail.
The ammunition belonged to United Nations Ammunition. De la Rosa said the bullets would not be returned to the company.
A spokesman with the Mexican Attorney General did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.
Bogan's attorney, Carlos Spector, maintains that Bogan made an honest mistake. But he said his lawyers decided not to fight the case, in part because of the potential political implications.
"He (De la Rosa) knew the options were get him out in six or seven months or sink him with a 30-year-sentence. Asking for a not-guilty sentence was impossible because the Mexican government had to get something out of this," Spector said.

Suicide blasts hit near US base in Afghan capital
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Two men wearing suicide vests blew themselves up near a U.S. base in Kabul early Wednesday, killing two Afghan guards in the heart of a neighborhood filled with foreign forces and embassies ? despite increased security ahead of a Muslim holy day that last year saw one the capital's deadliest attacks.
The bombers apparently meant to target the U.S. base but were spotted by policemen as they approached and detonated their vests before reaching the gate, police said.
The blast reverberated around Kabul's Wazir Akbar Khan neighborhood shortly after 8 a.m. local time. An alarm started going off at the nearby U.S. Embassy, warning staff to take cover. The neighborhood also is home to many high-ranking Afghan officials, international organizations and the headquarters of the international military coalition.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing in an email to reporters.
The attack came as foreign and Afghan forces tightened their watch over the capital ahead of the holy day of Ashoura on Saturday, when Shiite Muslims commemorate the seventh century death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.
Last year, the commemoration saw the first major sectarian attack since the fall of the Taliban regime. In that strike, a suicide bomber on foot detonated his vest amid scores of worshippers at a Shiite shrine, killing 56 people and wounding more than 160 others.
Attacks in Kabul are relatively rare and more recent strikes have not been particularly deadly, but have shown the continued ability of the insurgents to penetrate the security cordons that surround the city. The last previous attack before Wednesday's strike took place last week, when insurgents fired four rockets into the city, killing one person. The rockets hit near the airport, a private television station and close to a compound used by the Afghan intelligence service.
Wednesday's bombers were on foot and were spotted by Afghan security guards as they approached Camp Eggers, the Kabul police chief's office said in a statement. The police fired on the attackers and they detonated their vests. Two Afghan security guards were killed and five civilians were injured in the explosion, the statement said.
Associated Press video of the scene shows what looks like an undetonated suicide vest, suggesting not all the explosives went off.
An international coalition vehicle was also damaged in the attack but there were no initial reports of casualties among the foreign forces, said Jamie Graybeal, a NATO troops spokesman.
Police had already set up extra checkpoints around Kabul and specifically near shrines to search cars and people in the run up to the Ashoura.
"All our police units are in the first security alert position," Gen. Mohammad Daoud Amin, the city's deputy police chief, said Tuesday, the day before the Kabul attack. "We are at the service of the people and doing our best to provide good security and prevent any possible incident on Ashoura."

This LDS Military Wife: Family Home Evening: Scriptures
One thing I think that is getting lost in this "Mormon Moment" as people across the globe now watch as a tight race between our current president and Mitt Romney is coming to a close, is what our former Prophet Gordon B. Hinkley called, "...the great strength of this church." What is THE great strength? He answers this when he says, ?"It is the emphasis which we place on families."
And how much emphasis is placed on the family in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? So much so that we have one day a week devoted to the family. And guess what? ?It's not Sunday! Although we do keep Sunday very family oriented as well.?
Monday Nights are used for what we call "Family Home Evening" or "FHE."?
Gordon B. Hinkley explained this further, "We have a?family?home evening program once a week [Monday night] across the Church in which parents sit down with their children. They study the scriptures. They talk about family problems. They plan family activities and things of that kind. I don?t hesitate to say if every family in the world practiced that one thing, you?d see a very great difference in the solidarity of the families of the world"We believe this is expected of the Lord. This does NOT mean that we neglect our family the rest of the week. Far from it. We are expected to have daily family scripture study and prayers. FHE is a day set aside where all other activities are put aside for a special emphasis on the family unit.?
FHE is all about family bonding. Creating those strong ties that we believe last throughout eternity.?
FHE should be fun and something everyone enjoys.?
This week we are starting to use the Nursery Lesson Manual as a guide for our FHE.?

My greatest responsibility is helping my children gain their own relationship with Jesus Christ. I love FHE. I love the focus of the family that comes with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Successful families do not happen on accident or by some stroke of luck. It takes work, it takes effort and focus.?
