Samuel L. Jackson in the dark on new 'Star Wars'
SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Samuel L. Jackson's just like everybody else: He has no idea what's going on with the new "Star Wars" films.
Jackson was at Comic-Con on Saturday to promote his new film "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and held court on a number of subjects in an interview, including J.J. Abrams' new installments in George Lucas' cinema-changing franchise.
Unlike the tens of thousands of fans at the annual gathering of fans, though, Jackson has had the opportunity to ask what's up. And he still doesn't know.
Jackson played Jedi Master Mace Windu in the "Star Wars" prequels. He'd like more work for Windu and his purple light saber. But when he saw Abrams recently at Lucas' wedding, he gleaned no information about what will come next as the franchise moves on to its seventh film in 2015.
"J.J. was there, I was there," Jackson said in an interview at the Hard Rock Hotel. "I was like (raises eyebrows) and he was like (noncommittal shrug), and he just went about his business. I don't know what that means. Harrison (Ford) was there too, and he was like (shrug). I just think it would be cool to have some of us that people relate to as being part of the 'Star Wars' franchise to give entre to the new characters that they're going to bring to whatever the new thing is. It kind of makes it an easier entrance."
Jackson also wonders why his Nick Fury character isn't part of the new "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" television series. Fury oversees the global security spy agency in Marvel's cinematic universe, including "Marvel's The Avengers." But so far he hasn't been contacted about the show, which stars Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and debuts on ABC in September.
"I don't know how they've got the TV show without me, but they do," Jackson said. "Maybe I could be like Charlie in 'Charlie's Angels.' You just hear my voice. I send (the agents) out every week."

University of Missouri releases app to monitor effects of heat on cattle

A professor at the University of Missouri has developed a smartphone app that designed to?help farmers reduce their losses during the hot summer months.?
Don Spiers, a professor in the University of Missouri?s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, has developed a smartphone app that could help farmers reduce their losses during the hot summer months.
Spiers and his team developed the ThermalAid app, which helps animal farmers monitor their beef and dairy cattle. The app can aid them in identifying which animals are in danger because of the heat and how to best intervene.
?Cows are just like the rest of us,? Spiers says in a news release from the University of Missouri. ?They slow down in hot and humid weather.?
Spiers says heat causes cows to eat less, so they gain less weight and produce less milk. He says heat costs the dairy industry $900 million nationally each summer and the beef industry $400 million.
?And that?s data from 2003 when the industry was smaller and summers less intense,? he says in the release.
The app uses GPS to determine the temperature and humidity in the farmer?s area. They input factors like whether the animal is a beef or dairy cow and its health status. Using this information, the app gives the farmer the animal?s Temperature Humidity Index, which shows how the animal is handling the heat.
The app is available for 99 cents in the iTunes app store. Spiers and his team are working to develop a more advanced version of the app and expand it to work on other livestock, like sheep or poultry.

Google's Chrome app launcher now available for all Windows users
Though there's no official word from Google yet, it looks like the Chrome launcher has come out of developer preview mode and into full release, at least for Windows. On our own PCs, the installation placed the launcher app on the start page, taskbar and desktop for Windows 8 and in Windows 7's menu bar. From there, you can quickly access Chrome, the Chrome store, Gmail and any other apps that work with Google's ubiquitous browser / OS. We're not sure when it'll hit OS X or Linux (Chrome OS users have had it for awhile), but if your Windows workflow revolves around Mountain View's myriad products, you can enable it at the source.

S. Calif. wildfire forces more evacuations
IDYLLWILD, Calif. (AP) ? Authorities in Southern California issued evacuation orders for hundreds of homes Wednesday as a major wildfire approached in the mountains southwest of Palm Springs.
Large parts of the communities of Idyllwild and Fern Valley were under evacuation orders with an estimated 300 to 400 homes affected, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Carol Jandrall.
Residents were being allowed home to pick up essential items before evacuating, Jandrall said.
About 60 homes were already under evacuation orders and seven have been destroyed or damaged by the wildfire that broke out Monday.
Temperatures were in triple digits in the area and humidity in the single digits, said Tina Rose, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and similar conditions were forecast for the next two days.
"I was here at sun-up, and the fire was burning like it was 3 o'clock in the afternoon. That is extreme fire behavior," Rose said, adding that the area had not burned in many years. "The slightest little spark is going to make a run and torch trees. It's just so bone dry."
Idyllwild, known as a mountain vacation destination, also has many year-round residents and is popular with artists. Combined with the smaller surrounding communities of Pine Cove and Fern Valley it's home to nearly 4,000 people. About half of the area is under the evacuation order.
The blaze destroyed three houses, damaged another and destroyed three mobile homes, a cabin, a garage and about a half-dozen vehicles, the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement Tuesday. Eleven outbuildings, five commercial buildings and several smaller structures also have been lost.
The wildfire started Monday between Palm Springs and Hemet, near the rural Riverside County community of Mountain Center, and grew to more than 22 square miles by Wednesday. It was burning in thick brush and trees at an elevation of 5,000 to 7,500 feet.
More than 2,200 firefighters and 25 aircraft had the blaze about 10 percent contained.
Camp Ronald McDonald, which hosts programs for children with cancer and their families, was also evacuated.
The fire was burning in the San Jacinto Mountains, about 12 miles from the site of the 2006 Esperanza wildfire that killed five U.S. Forest Service firefighters and destroyed 34 homes.

Panda twins were born at Zoo Atlanta Monday, the first twin pandas?born in the United States since 1987. Zookeepers were expecting only one cub and were surprised when the?giant?panda?named Lun Lun gave birth to baby panda twins.

The 15-year-old?panda?went into labor Monday afternoon and gave birth to the first cub at 6:21 p.m. EDT and the second two minutes later. Hines said zookeepers who had been anticipating only one cub based on a recent ultrasound were surprised by the first-ever twin?panda?births at Zoo Atlanta.
"We have twins!" Zoo Atlanta announced on its website.
An ultrasound on June 30 determined that Lun Lun was pregnant with her fourth cub. Hines says zookeepers weren't expecting the tiny duo, however.
The twin cubs are the first giant?pandas?to be born in the United States in 2013, Hines added.
Zoo officials are working with animal care workers from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant?Panda?Breeding, where Lun Lun and her 15-year-old partner, Yang Yang, were born. There was no immediate report on the size or weight of the cubs at birth, nor the condition of the offspring and mother.
But zoo officials were in a celebratory mood.
"This is a success we share with all of our fellow zoological organizations working to understand and protect this iconic species, and we share our joy with our local community and with our colleagues in China," said Raymond B. King, Zoo Atlanta's president and CEO.
"Twins are an entirely new scenario for Lun Lun, Zoo Atlanta and our animal care teams, who will no doubt be extremely busy over the next few months," his statement added.
Lun Lun had been artificially inseminated in March and has been under 24-hour observation by a camera providing a live video feed from her den. Officials said the newborns' father is 15-year-old Yang Yang. Zookeepers weren't immediately sure of the genders of the cubs.
Zookeepers said Lun Lun is caring for one of the cubs while animal management and veterinary teams from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant?Panda?Center care for the other in a nursery center. Officials said they will likely rotate the cubs between the nursery and Lun Lun's care to ensure they each get enough maternal nurturing without overexerting the 15-year-old giant?panda.
Giant?pandas?typically only care for one cub when twins are born in the wild ? which usually leads to only one of the twins surviving, Hines noted.
Giant?panda?twins have survived in zoos by officials rotating the cubs with the mother during their first few months of life. Hines said giant?pandas?have a high mortality rate in the first few months after birth, and the risk is greater when twins are born.
Visitors to Zoo Atlanta will likely be able to visit the cubs later this year, Hines said.
She added that Yang Yang and the cubs' older brothers ? Xi Lan, 4, and Po, 2 ? remain on exhibit and will not be housed with Lun Lun or the cubs. The separation is normal and occurs naturally in the wild, Hines said.
Less than 1,600 giant?pandas?are believed to be living in the wild, Hines said. Zoo Atlanta was awarded the International Conservation Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2012 for its work to preserve the species.
