Obama's Birthday Weekend: Golf and Terror Threat

WASHINGTON - President Obama, who turns 52 Sunday, spent today playing golf with friends at Joint Base Andrews, but before he went he was briefed on the terrorist threat that will cause 21 U.S. embassies to close Sunday.

"Before departing this morning, the president was updated on the potential threat occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula by Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Lisa Monaco. He will continue to be updated through the weekend," a White House official told reporters.

The State Department has ordered all U.S. embassies to close Sunday. Most are closed anyway on Sundays, except those in Muslim countries, meaning the closures affect 21 embassies in the Muslim world. The State Department also issued a worldwide travel alert for Americans on Friday.

He'll continue to receive updates throughout the weekend, the White House said.

After the briefing, the president's motorcade left the White House with golf clubs and at least one cooler in tow. Later, he planned to head to Camp David.

Three groups teed off at Andrews, according to a White House official, including a smattering of old friends and former colleagues. Among them were two Chicago friends, Marty Nesbitt and Eric Whitaker, the latter of which attended grad school with Obama at Harvard. So were high school friends Mike Ramos and Bobby Titcomb, who was arrested in 2011 in Honolulu on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute. The Associated Press reported that he pleaded "no contest" later that year; Obama has played golf with him at least twice since the arrest.

Former aide Reggie Love and Chicago chef Sam Kass, who has also served as a White House chef, senior policy adviser on nutrition, and executive director of Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, also played.

Obama was expected to depart for Camp David in the afternoon, returning Sunday.

The presidential golf outing got cool-for-August morning temperatures accompanied by some intermittent, light drizzling rain.

White House Vetoes Ban on Some Apple iPad, iPhone Sales

Apple received good news Saturday when U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman overturned a ban by a U.S. trade body that would have prevented the company from importing and selling some iPhone and iPad products. It was a rare move. The last time the White House vetoed a decision by the U.S. International Trade Commission was in 1987, notes the Wall Street Journal. The ITC had previously ordered the ban on several older Apple products because they infringed on Samsung patents.

In explaining the decision, Froman emphasized he wasn?t making his decision based on the merits of Samsung?s case, but rather because the patents involved widely used technology and imposing the ban would have a negative effect on consumers and the market as a whole. "This decision is based on my review of the various policy considerations ... as they relate to the effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy and the effect on U.S. consumers," Froman wrote in his decision.

Although Apple?s latest products wouldn?t have been affected, older models like the iPhone 4 are popular among customers who are more price conscious, points out the Los Angeles Times. Apple praised the White House on Saturday for ?standing up for innovation.?

Left tackle Sean Hickey leads list of Syracuse 2014 NFL Draft prospects, according to CBS Sports

We're a long way from the 2014 NFL Draft, but CBSSports.com released a mega-database on Thursday ranking the prospects who would be eligible for that draft.

Syracuse had one of its best drafts in recent memory in April, watching left tackle Justin Pugh become a first-round selection by the New York Giants, and quarterback Ryan Nassib (Giants) and safety Shamarko Thomas (Pittsburgh Steelers) go off the board in the fourth round.

And even though most fans probably are more concerned with these players' performance over the next four months than they are with their pro credentials, it's still an interesting take on how good Syracuse's upperclassmen are perceived to be relative to their collegiate counterparts.

The list is massive, totaling about 1,000 players, so we're just linking to that here and breaking out the SU players for brevity's sake.

No. 59 Sean Hickey: A projected second-round pick, Hickey is listed as the No. 8-rated offensive tackle. He's set to take over for Pugh at the left tackle position this year.

No. 164 Jerome Smith: Like Hickey, Smith still has another year of eligibility remaining after this season. He's projected as a fifth-round pick, which falls in line with the results he received when he submitted his name to the NFL Draft Advisory Board after last season. Smith is listed as the No. 13-rated running back.

No. 208 Keon Lyn: The senior cornerback is projected as a sixth-round pick and is rated as the No. 25 player at his position. Lyn, secondary coach Fred Reed told me, has really stood out as a leader in the defensive backfield through spring ball.

No. 455 Drew Allen: Allen hasn't taken many significant snaps in a game since he was in high school, and his ranking reflects that notion. He's projected as an undrafted free agent and is listed as the No. 25-rated quarterback. Of course, his draft stock can rise if he wins the quarterback competition at Syracuse and turns in a solid season.

No. 474 Marquis Spruill: The senior linebacker is ranked No. 20 at his position (inside linebacker) and is projected as an undrafted free agent. Spruill's ability both inside and outside is a plus, but his size, particularly at a position with a market supply that far exceeds its demand, probably hurts him here. His workout numbers, though, may change that.

No. 502 Charley Loeb: The fifth-year senior, a career backup, is rated as the No. 29 quarterback among draft-eligible prospects.

No. 511 Ri'Shard Anderson: Anderson will enter the preseason as a starter at cornerback opposite Lyn but will be pressed by Brandon Reddish. Anderson is ranked No. 55 at his position.

No. 531 Macky MacPherson: This rating is most likely a byproduct of MacPherson's size --- he's only 6-foot-2, 290 pounds. MacPherson is listed as the No. 18-rated center, which I think is a little low.

No. 571 Jay Bromley: Projected as an undrafted free agent and listed as the No. 43-rated defensive tackle, Bromley could see the biggest jump in his draft stock by the end of the season. He was hurt most of last year, and now all eyes will be on him to anchor the defensive line.

No. 625 Ross Krautman: He's rated at the 10th-best kicker among draft eligible prospects. Unfortunately, hardly any teams spend a draft pick on a kicker. He's seen his production dip over the course of his career and will look to bounce back in 2013.

No. 643 Adrian Flemming: Projected as an undrafted free agent, Flemming is listed as the No. 81-rated wide receiver in the group. He has no career catches.

No. 653 Prince-Tyson Gulley: He's listed as the 50th-ranked running back, but his size (5-foot-10, 192 pounds) might be a deterrent to some teams. He had a breakout season in 2012 but will still split carries this fall with Syracuse's depth at running back.

No. 724 Jeremi Wilkes: He's rated as the 33rd-best free safety prospect and will again start at free safety. Wilkes will have to improve his tackling to be given a serious look as an undrafted free agent.

No. 769 Beckett Wales: Wales is Syracuse's best tight end but comes in at No. 41 among draft-eligible prospects.

No. 918 Clay Cleveland: Cleveland, rated the 27th-best fullback on this list, has a bigger problem. His position seems to be dying in football.

What do you think? Did CBS Sports get it right (as of Aug. 1)? Will Syracuse have more than three players drafted in 2014? Who are the best NFL prospects on Syracuse's roster, including underclassmen?

Madeline Abramson, wife of Lt. Gov., reveals breast cancer diagnosis

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - Madeline Abramson, the wife of Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson, revealed on Wednesday that she was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the year.

Abramson, 57, told the Lexington Herald-Leader her cancer was diagnosed after a routine mammogram in April. She told the newspaper her prognosis is "excellent" following surgery and radiation treatment that she underwent in Louisville.

Abramson said she and her husband, the former mayor of Louisville, chose to keep the breast cancer diagnosis private until she recovered, adding that she continues to take medication. She decided to share her story in response to a Lexington Herald-Leader inquiry about her health and to encourage Kentuckians to take preventive health care measures.

CSU Rams coach Jim McElwain pleased by team's new direction, slogan

FORT COLLINS ? Speaking Thursday during a pre-camp chat with reporters, Colorado State football coach Jim McElwain acknowledged that "it's yet to be determined" whether his team will take a major step after having worked under the new staff for a year.

But McElwain said he likes the vibe. That includes players coming up with a slogan for this season:

"One town. One team. One dream."

"I am really excited at what they chose, independently, as a team affirmation," McElwain said. "I think they are understanding that each one of us is responsible for this town. They are responsible for this team. And each one of us has to carry that dream.

"That really hit me that we're headed in the right direction."

Colorado State returns 17 starters off its 4-8 team of a year ago. But even with that experience, McElwain expects more competition at every position during this August camp, which starts Tuesday.

McElwain said players worked extra hard during offseason conditioning and in team building.

"I feel a whole lot better this year with the strides our guys have made," McElwain said. "The light really came on."

As for the slogan or motto, senior cornerback Shaq Bell said the players were in a meeting room kicking around ideas. Senior defensive end Shaq Barrett came up with "One town. One team. One dream," Bell said. McElwain and players said they will not divulge the dream or team goal at this time.

"We wanted one slogan that fit the team," Bell said. "Everyone liked it. The 'One town' was for the whole community to get into it and that we're playing for the community and not just for ourselves. The 'One team' is that all the players and all the coaches, we're all bought in.

"The 'One Dream' part ? we're not going to bring that out yet."

Senior long snapper Tanner Hedstrom said the "one town" part of the slogan is special to him, being a native of Fort Collins.

"We've got a lot of true fans," Hedstrom said, "but I remember when (this program) was going to all those bowl games and winning (conference) championships, and the stadium was packed and people were sitting (in overflow) on the grass. That's what we're trying to get back to."

NFL Pro Bowl rosters to be determined by draft

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL Pro Bowl rosters for next year will be selected in a draft by team captains, with Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice assisting as alumni captains.

The NFL will abandon the AFC vs. NFC format that has been in place since 1971.

The league says Wednesday that fan voting will determine the players in the draft pool. The draft will be televised by the NFL Network on Jan. 22. The game will be played Jan. 26 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Other changes are coming to the game, too.

The ball will change hands at the end of each quarter, which could double the opportunities for two-minute drills. Kickoffs (and return specialists) will be eliminated ? teams will start on their own 25-yard line. Defenses will be allowed to play cover-2 and press coverage in addition to man, and several clock tweaks have been instituted to speed up the game and prompt offensive play.
