Maingear reveals more heat-dissipating desktops, keeps those new Ivy Bridge internals cool

Maingear gave us a quick nudge to say something was coming. Now it can reveal that -- alongside Intel's third-generation processors inside all of its desktops and laptops -- it's further updated two of its tower models. The F131 ($1,049), the middleweight option, now houses the same vertical heat-dissipating design found on Maingear's Shift model, alongside hot-swappable storage. It's followed by the Potenza ($899), the company's "mini-ITX gaming solution." It's 45 percent smaller than the F131 with the same heat dissipation design, but still capable of squeezing in NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680 and support for a liquid cooling setup on the side. Phew. So pick your size, pick your processor and hit up the source for all the custom desktop options.

How Great Entrepreneurs Create Their Own Luck

It?s also a parable for how great entrepreneurs systematically create their own luck. Jane ni Dhulchaointigh is the founder and CEO of Sugru, a London-based startup that makes an amazing moldable adhesive for repairing any physical object. Exclusive: 'Planet Of The Apes' Sequel Rising In Summer 2014

Fox CEO confirms to MTV News that Andy Serkis is 'fully committed' to return as the rebel ape leader, Caesar.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

If you haven't seen one of last summer's finest blockbusters or somehow didn't understand the implication of the film's give-away-the-ending title, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" concludes with the highly evolved apes poised to take over the world. Where exactly the story will pick up in Fox's planned sequel is something filmmakers haven't quite cracked, but now we know exactly when audiences will get a chance to check it out.

"That will be a summer '14 movie," Fox head honcho Tom Rothman exclusively told MTV News at CinemaCon at Las Vegas.

Director Rupert Wyatt is locked in to return to the director's chair after the first film in the rebooted franchise grossed over $480 million worldwide. And Andy Serkis, who wowed moviegoers with his motion-captured portrayal of rebel ape leader, Caesar — a performance that without a doubt deserved high-profile awards-season love but didn't receive any — is also set to reprise his role. "Andy's fully committed to it," Rothman said.

But what about that question of when in the franchise timeline the sequel will begin? During the original film's post-credits sequence, we saw the genetically engineered virus created by James Franco's scientist begin to spread across the globe, thanks to one infected patient's ill-advised airplane trip. How much time will have passed between that pandemic and the start of the sequel has not been decided.

"I think one of the big questions they're wrestling with now, which is kind of the fun, is how far forward do we skip?" Rothman said. "When does it start? Does it start the next day? The next year? Does it start in 10 years? Does it start in 50 years?"

Part of that storytelling decision will also have to take into account a third film, because as Rothman reaffirmed, Fox is planning "Apes" as a trilogy. And he'll accept nothing less than scripts that are even better than the original's. "The script for that 'Apes' film was fantastic," Rothman explained. "We had the script for 10 years, and I always knew it was one of the best scripts. I just didn't think it was possible to do it. I thought it couldn't be done. ... We got to have a great script. Because now, having made that good a movie, we better make the next one better."

Check out everything we've got on "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

Chrome OS and Google Drive to get intimate in version 20

When Google finally announced its shiny new cloud-based Drive service, many people will have been glad to see an extra bit of storage tacked onto their daily gadget lives. Some, however, spin out a generally more nebular existence, and that'd be the Chrome OS faithful. If you find yourself amongst their number, you'll be pleased to know that Sundar Pichai, SVP for Chrome, revealed in an interview with Wired that the next iteration of its slight operating system will come with Drive tightly sewn into the fabric. The idea is that the service will operate as the local file system, and all the core OS functionality will use Drive for storing data. Third party apps like VMware are already baking in Drive functionality, and expect more to follow when it lands in version 20.

Rosetta Stone Acquires Kid-Focused Language-Learning Startup GoGo Lingo

Screen shot 2012-04-25 at 11.57.22 AMRosetta Stone, for those unfamiliar, are the makers of the oft-advertised language learning software of the same name. The 20-year-old Virginia-based company went public in 2009, and today makes learning software for over 30 languages that is used in over 150 countries. Yet, in spite of its brand recognition, a number of translation and language-learning startups have begun to pop up with savvy online solutions, which has prompted Rosetta Stone to move to boost both its kid-friendly learning options and its digital distribution. In so doing, Rosetta Stone is today announcing that it has completed the acquisition of Los Angeles-based language learning startup, GoGo Lingo. Founded back in 2008 by Afsoun Yazdian, who developed GoGoLingo's proprietary "Playful Immersion" method while at Stanford, a language learning method designed to help kids ages 3 to 7 learn Spanish through implicit absorption.

Google back in the smartphone sales game: unlocked Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ (GSM) available for $399

galaxy nexus google on sale

Hang on to your kneecaps, folks. Google's just announced that its making the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ available in its Play web store for $399 contract-free. That's right: the unlocked, unbranded, pure Google, 16GB GSM version everyone's been importing from foreign lands far and near is now officially available in the US -- booyah! The handset ships with Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and comes with Google Wallet pre-installed (including a $10 credit to get you started with the company's mobile payment service).

As a refresher, it's not Google's first time in the smartphone sales game. The company made the Nexus One available on its own website in 2010 before pulling the plug and then partnering with Best Buy to sell the Nexus S later that year. One of the problems with the Nexus One was support -- or lack thereof. Google's assured us things will be different this time and it will be offering proper support for its Nexus flagship. We sure hope so.

The Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ is on sale now for $399 (plus taxes and two-day shipping) in the new Devices section of the Play web store. It's a phenomenal deal for one of the best Android phones on the market today -- especially when you consider it provides 21Mbps HSPA+ with great battery life (unlike the "fake" Nexus) and no commitment on your choice of AT&T or T-Mobile. So go ahead, stick it to the carriers and get a taste of dumb-pipe utopia -- delicious, isn't it?

U. S. Middle class prospering more than commonly believed, study finds

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? Long portrayed as stagnant in economic terms, the income growth of the U.S. middle class may be much greater than suggested by economists like Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez, according to a new study at Cornell University.

Median income of the U.S. middle class rose by as much as 37 percent from 1979-2007 says Richard Burkhauser, Cornell professor of policy analysis and management, in the study, "A 'second opinion' on the economic health of the American middle class," published in the March issue of National Tax Journal. In contrast, when Piketty and Saez-style estimates were used, median income increased by only 3.2 percent over the same period.

Unlike the IRS data Piketty and Saez use, Burkhauser's team -- using data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey -- was able to show how much the income picture changes when taxes are subtracted from market income and government transfers such as welfare assistance, unemployment insurance and Social Security benefits are added. The team also adjusted for household size and the value of health insurance -- factors Burkhauser says more accurately reflect financial resources available to middle class individuals.

Says Burkhauser: "When we broaden our measure to include government taxes and transfers and look at households adjusted for size, the gains of middle class Americans are ten times larger. The gains are even more when we include the value of in-kind income such as the value of employer and government provided health insurance."

The study demonstrates how the decisions one makes about what to include when measuring income (market income vs. after tax and transfer income from all sources) and how that income is shared (by tax unit or by household) can substantially change the view of how the average American has fared over the last 30 years, and can have implications for public policy choices targeted at specific income classes.

Burkhauser's co-authors are Jeff Larrimore of the Joint Committee of Taxation, and Kosali Simon, professor of public and environmental affairs at Indiana University.

Smartphone camera shootout: iPhone 4S vs. HTC One S

Featured

18 hrs.

Though most current Android smartphones come with high-resolution cameras, most of these pale in comparison to the iPhone 4S? 8-MP shooter Not only does the average Android camera take lower quality pictures than Apple?s handset, it also takes a lot longer to fire up and shoot. HTC's new One S?phone promises to change all that by providing high-speed shots, an f/2.0 aperture 8-MP lens for improved picture quality, and powerful camera software that provides over a dozen filters, HDR mode and more.

To see which phone takes the best pictures and provides the best overall photo-taking experience, we grabbed an HTC One S and an iPhone 4S and used them to shoot the same subjects. The results may surprise you.

Detail shots

When we shot a photo of a stone relief on our office roof with both phones on auto mode, the iPhone 4S?s photo appeared just a bit sharper and more detailed. Considering that the stone was covered with late-afternoon shadows, the iPhone also captured more light, resulting in a brighter image.

Winner: iPhone

HDR Pictures

Both phones support high dynamic range (HDR) photography. HDR photos provide a greater degree of contrast between foreground and background objects by?effectively light-metering them differently. So, with HDR enabled, a building should look just as bright and colorful as the blue sky behind it.

Unfortunately, after you shoot an HDR photo, you have to wait a good 3 to 4 seconds for it to process. So you?ll only want to use HDR mode for high-contrast situations where a foreground object is significantly lighter?or darker than the scene behind it.

To test HDR on both phones, we went up on?our roof and shot a picture of some buildings against a blue sky. Though both shots look great, the?iPhone 4S?s photo seems just a bit more colorful, particularly when you look at the blue in the sky, the white in the tower and the green in the dome.

This photo of a church was also taken in HDR and, as you can see, both the sky and the stone walls of the church appear much brighter and more colorful in the iPhone?s photo.

Winner: iPhone 4S

Outdoor shots

When we took a photo of a tree, we noticed that the iPhone 4S?s version was sharper and a little bolder in terms of saturation.

When we shot a bed of flowers in a shady area, the HTC One S?s picture was brighter, but the iPhone 4S?s shot seemed a bit more accurate, given the shady lighting. Which you prefer ?the more true-to-life shot or the more vibrant shot ? is a matter of personal preference.

?In this photo of a statue, colors are clearly richer on the iPhone 4S, while they seem a bit washed out on the HTC One S. And while the statue appears brighter in the One S shot, the details get blown out a bit.

Indoor shots

To test out each phone?s ability to shoot indoors, we brought them home to our apartment and took some photos of a baby and a cat.

In real life, the room was rather dim, but the iPhone 4S brightened up the photo a bit. The cat?s fur seems much sharper in the iPhone 4S?s picture than in the HTC One S?s. We notice, however, that the iPhone?s pictures have a bit of a yellow hue while the One S?s seem more red and purple.

When we shot a baby who was a bit red in the face, the photo on the HTC One S seemed sharper and more accurately reflected his real-world skin tone. However, the sunnier colors on the iPhone 4S looked pretty attractive.

We also shot a photo of some random objects and found that colors like the red in an Iron Man bobble head doll were just a little deeper in the iPhone 4S?s picture.

Winner: iPhone 4S by a narrow?margin?

Shutter speed

HTC claims that the One S can shoot a photo in just .7 seconds, and when we timed the shutter with a stopwatch, it took around that amount of time. When we performed the same test on the iPhone 4S, times were also under a second so it seems like both of these phones are equally speedy. Neither phone has a dedicated camera button, but both let you launch their camera apps directly from their lock screens, making it easy to start a photo session in just a second or two.

Though the phones shoot single photos with equal speed, only the HTC One S is able to shoot in a .2-second burst mode that lets you quickly capture action shots. When you hold down the shutter button, the One S shoots up to 99 pictures in a row and then allows you to designate one as the ?best shot? and discard the others.

Winner: HTC One S

1080p Video

Unlike most phones, both the iPhone 4S and the HTC One S can?shoot 1080p video. We shot a few seconds of HD footage of cars?rolling down Fifth avenue on a cloudy day. Though both videos are sharp, smooth and colorful, the One S?s video looked just a touch more vibrant. The One S also supports 60 fps slow-motion video, something you can?t do on the iPhone 4S at all.?

Winner: HTC One S

Special effects and filters

When it comes to camera software, the HTC One S beats the iPhone 4S hands down. Where the iPhone?s preloaded camera software gives users minmal options, HTC?s ImageSense software provides a bevy of special effects and features.

Using the One S?s camera app, we were able to shoot panoramic images, tweak the light mode, and apply more than a dozen filters to our photos before we shot them. We particularly like the dots filter which makes photos look like a cubist painting, but users can also take advantage of a couple of ?vintage? filters which make your photos look like they belong on Instagram. If you decide you want to turn your photo into sepia colors or use the distort effect on it after you?ve already shot it, you can apply any of the filters by tapping Edit in the Gallery.?

Because of the speed of the camera, users can also take a series of 99 action shots at once and then choose the ?best photo? with the software. The app even lets you shoot still pictures while filming a video.

With the iPhone 4S, you do get some basic editing features that let you crop, remove red eye from and otherwise enhance pictures after they?ve already been shot. While the One S does not come with a dedicated red-eye removal tool in its editor, it allows you to crop photos, apply effects and even adjust the brightness, contrast and color levels on photos. In iOS, you need third-party apps like Camera Plus to apply effects to your photos.

Winner: HTC One S

Verdict

Both the iPhone 4S and the HTC One S have really strong 8-MP cameras that are capable of shooting sharp, colorful still images in under a second. Both phones can also capture great 1080p video, and provide support for HDR.?

When it comes to features, the HTC One S is superior to the iPhone in every way, offering burst mode, the ability to shoot photos while filming video, slow motion video capture, and a wide variety of filters and settings you can?t get on the iPhone without third party software. Because of all these functions, the act of shooting pictures on the HTC One S is a lot more fun than on the iPhone 4S.

However, there?s a noticeable difference in still image quality that favors the iPhone. Though both take attractive photos, the iPhone?s pictures are almost always brighter, sharper and more colorful than the One S?s. When you look closely at pictures from the two phones side-by-side, it?s clear that ? at least in the automatic and HDR modes we used ? the iPhone?s photos feel warmer and have more of a yellow hue while the HTC One S?s shots are colder and have more of dark red or purple bias. In almost all cases, the iPhone photos were sharper and more detailed so when you combine that with warmer colors, you have better looking images.

If you?re looking for the smartphone with the best software, the HTC One S for T-Mobile is your best choice. If you?re looking for the best Android phone camera experience, the HTC One S is probably your best choice too. However, if still image quality is?your top concern, the iPhone 4S is simply the better handset. Given the choice, we?ll always prioritize image quality over camera features so we have to give this face-off to the iPhone 4S.

Intel's first smartphone coming soon: Xolo X900 gets April 24 release date

Intel's first smartphone release date

Intel's first Atom smartphone is now available, and it's Lava's Xolo X900. It has managed to outpace both Lenovo's K800 and Orange's Santa Clara, arriving on the Indian carrier next Monday. When we handled the Xolo X900 in Barcelona a few months ago, the 1.6 GHz Atom Z2460 processor seemed pleasantly responsive, although we were less enamoured with the phone's middling build quality. The four-inch 1024 x 600 display is accompanied by a one-megapixel camera on the front, plus a primary 8-megapixel shooter on the back capable of burst-shot photography. Despite its plastic build, Intel's new mobile offering won't come all that cheap; the Xolo X900 by Lava is priced off-contract at around 22,000 INR ($420). At the moment, we're still waiting to hear how Orange and Lenovo will price up their own Medfield-powered offerings -- both are expected to emerge in the next few months.

Rihanna Preps Fancy Footwork For 'Where Have You Been' Video

'I was never going to shoot this video if I couldn't do choreography,' Rihanna says in behind-the-scenes video montage.

Rihanna has never been known as a dancer, but she's ready to step her game up for her upcoming "Where Have You Been" video. In an almost three-minute-long behind-the-scenes montage clip that surfaced on Thursday, the megastar takes her Navy to the dance studio, where she's seen practicing a routine for the upcoming clip alongside a crew of dancers.

Rocking some appropriate rehearsal attire and simple sneaks, Ri turns to the camera at one point to admit that a dance routine was necessary for the hard dance track's video, saying, "I was never going to shoot this video if I couldn't do choreography, 'cause it would be pretty pointless. It would be disappointing."

As with the foot skills she performed in clips like "Rude Boy" and old-school joint "If It's Lovin' That You Want," choreographer Hi-Hat helped keep Rihanna's moves in line with the singer's comfort and style, while still showing off the most choreography we've ever seen her do.

As one of the world's biggest pop stars, the recent Billboard Music Awards nominee also revealed that devoting time to performance skills for videos is rare. "My schedule has always been so busy, it never really allowed for us to spend time rehearsing and making up dance moves," she said.

Just last week, Rihanna took to her Facebook to tease a dazzling black-and-white shot from the clip, where she's seen exposing her midriff and kneeling before forest-like scenery. No word on when the video will be released, but with a recently announced musical guest gig on "Saturday Night Live," "Where Have You Been" is likely to be one of the singer's performance sets on the May 5 show. This will mark her third appearance on the late-night sketch comedy show, which will be hosted by New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

What do you think of Rihanna's fancy footwork? Sound off below.

Skills, Techniques And Tips For A Successful Self Help Plan ...

Self-help principles are designed to help you achieve all of your greatest dreams and turn you into a complete person. By using self-help techniques in your daily life you will slowly better yourself and at the same time learn to feel and experience more joy in your life. This article contains self-help tips you can use to better yourself. Find out more about should you text your ex today if you are serious in getting your ex back today.

Do not overlook learning how to relax as part of personal development. It is easy to get caught up with the multitude of responsibilities and demands that you face everyday. When you learn to relax you give yourself the chance to re-energize and regroup for new challenges. If you do not learn to relax you will only burn out yourself quickly, thus reducing your productivity.

Spend some of the day in silence. Most of us are always going with different sounds in our ears. When?s the last time you enjoyed complete silence? Turn off your phone for a half hour a day, turn off the music and go somewhere by yourself to just listen to peaceful stillness. This will cause you to be still, too.

Prioritize your goals, and value the best things in your life. If you?re working towards specific ends, be sure to weigh its importance against other obligations in your life. This will enable you to develop a practical timeline for personal goals and encourages confidence in your successes. Success will taste so much sweeter if you make your goals manageable!

A great self help tip is to try stopping yourself whenever you?re thinking negative thoughts. We all have the ability to rewire our thinking patterns. By stopping yourself when you think a negative thought, you?ll be more aware of your thoughts and you?ll find yourself feeling much better.

A great way to develop yourself is to make sure your body, mind, and spirit are all in harmony. Once you are in complete harmony, you will notice an immediate calm fill your entire body. This is needed to reduce the stress from our hectic lives that we lead. The only way to possess complete harmony is to have true love.

Keep a list of all the times in your life when you felt big or incredibly strong. Try making this list every night before you go to bed. There are no things that are too small or silly; go ahead and list them. Use these remembrances to help draw on your inner strength and add those familiar feelings to who you are today.

You can improve your productivity in one simple way: waking up earlier. Waking up earlier not only boosts your confidence, but it gives you additional hours of the day to complete the day?s work. If you give yourself more time, you can work a little slower and ensure that you do the job right every time.

Acceptance of failure is a necessity of personal growth. Try as we might, we don?t always succeed. So one needs to be able to deal with failure. That means accepting that things did not go as planned and refusing to allow that fact to impede one?s progress. Look honestly at the factors that led to the failure and find a way to go forward in spite of the set back.

A key to success is recognizing the difference between things you can control and things you can?t. You cannot foresee what will happen to you, but you can control how you react to it. Learn how to be optimistic and you will find ways around the roadblocks in life. Don?t beat yourself up over mistakes, learn from them than move on.

Develop and continually cultivate a positive attitude. Start by affirming your own belief in yourself, then celebrate the small achievements you make every day. Fuel your desire to succeed by developing a ?can do? attitude. Surround yourself with others that practice positive attitudes and develop a network of positive supporters.

Learn as much you can about what is troubling you. Educate yourself. It might seem obvious, but surprisingly few people actually take the time to sit down and study the things that are upsetting them or the factors that could be exacerbating matters. Taking the time to study up on these things can make a huge difference.

Do one thing to improve yourself everyday. Little improvements add up and define the person that you are. Meeting daily self-improvement goals will not only make you better at the things that you do, it will also improve your mood and your confidence. Try to be a little better each day than you were the day before.

A great personal development tip that everyone would do well to abide by is to justify your beliefs. You are only kidding yourself if you don?t truly have faith in the things in and it can hinder your personal growth a great deal. Be honest with yourself about what you believe in.

The most effective self-help process is one that is organized and well thought out. The tips and advice provided in this article will help you to develop this type of effective self-help process, pushing you to fulfill your potential. By following the advice in this article, you empower yourself to move your life in a significantly positive direction. Learn more about how to date women now to get back your ex today.

BBS version of Google takes you back in time, won't hog your phone line

BBS version of Google takes you back in time, won't hog your phone line
If the third digit of your birth year is a nine (or heck, a zero), you'll likely never have experienced the true agony joy that was BBS or Bulletin Board Systems. Well, thanks to nostalgic developer Norbert Landsteiner, you can take a glimpse at how your dad got online with an HTML / JavaScript emulation BBS Google. Likewise, more seasoned travelers of the internet can take a trip down memory lane and see what Mountain View's search engine might have looked like "back in the day." All the details are there, right down to the familiar modem tones and ASCII graphics, it's even somewhat functional (when the API isn't over its limit.) So, want to appreciate that browser you complain about on twitter all the time over your LTE connection? Tab on down to the source link for a lesson in gratitude.
