A bee with a transmitter glued to its back was one of the specimens in a study that used the radio technology to track what happened to bee colonies exposed to a widely used pesticide.
By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com
A widely used crop pesticide first introduced in the 1990s has caused significant changes to bee colonies worldwide and removing it could be the key factor in restoring nature's army of pollinators, according to two studies released Thursday.
The scientists behind the studies called for regulators to consider banning the class of?chemicals known as neonicotinoid insecticides. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency told msnbc.com that the studies would be incorporated into a review that's currently underway.
"Our study raises important issues regarding pesticide authorization procedures,"?stated Mikael Henry, co-author of a study on?honey bees. "So far, they mostly require manufacturers to ensure that doses encountered on the field do not kill bees, but they basically ignore the consequences of doses that do not kill them but may cause behavioral difficulties."
"There is an urgent need to develop alternatives to the widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides on flowering crops wherever possible," added the authors of the second study on bumble bees.
The studies are the first?to go outside the lab and into the fields, where the experts said they?detected how the pesticide impacts bees as they collect pollen and pollinate flowers and crops.
Honey bee populations have been crashing around the world in recent years, and pesticides have been suspected, along with other potential factors such as parasites, disease?and habitat loss, in what's known as Colony Collapse Disorder. In the U.S., some beekeepers in 2006 began reporting losses of 30-90 percent of their hives, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Combating Colony Collapse Disorder is hardly an esoteric exercise. The USDA notes that "bee pollination is responsible for $15 billion in added crop value, particularly for specialty crops such as almonds and other nuts, berries, fruits, and vegetables.
"About one mouthful in three in the diet directly or indirectly benefits from honey bee pollination," it adds.
Published in the peer-reviewed journal Science, one study by?British scientists?looked at honey bees and the other by French scientists examined bumble bees, which unlike honey bees live in the wild but also are key pollinators.
In the?bumble bee study, researchers concluded that?colonies treated with?nonlethal levels of?the pesticide "had a significantly reduced growth rate and suffered an 85% reduction in production of new queens" compared to colonies without the pesticide.
"It was quite?massive,"?researcher Penelope Whitehorn said of the reduction?at a press conference Thursday.?(Click here for audio of the news conference.)
"Bumble bees have an annual life cycle and it is only new queens that survive the winter to found colonies in the spring," the authors noted. "Our results suggest that trace levels of neonicotinoid pesticides can have strong negative consequence for queen production by bumble bee colonies under realistic field conditions, and this is likely to have a substantial population-level impact."
In the honey bee study, radio transmitters were attached to the back of?bees?to see how they foraged in conditions with and without the pesticide.
The pesticide, the researchers concluded, impaired the homing ability of bees and exposed bees were two to three times more likely to die while away from the hive. That?"high mortality ...?could put a colony at risk of collapse" within a few weeks of exposure, especially in combination with other stressors,?they noted.
"We were actually quite surprised by the magnitude," Henry told reporters.
The EPA, contacted by msnbc.com, provided a statement saying that it has "begun reviewing the two studies ... and they will be considered as part of registration review." Non-EPA scientists will weigh in at a special meeting in the fall, it added.
The prevailing view among most scientists and regulators is that?"complex interactions among multiple stressors" are?to blame, the EPA stated.? "While our understanding of the potential role of pesticides in pollinator health declines is still progressing, we continue to seek to learn what regulatory changes, if any, may be effective."
The American Chemistry Council, which represents the chemical industry, told msnbc.com it would comment on the studies once its experts had reviewed them.

How can you decide how much you have for bills and expenses when your paycheck varies from one payday to the next? That?s a question a lot of people struggle with.
A few of the occupations that I can think of off hand that could fall into this category are waitresses or waiters working for salary and tips, truck drivers that are paid by the mile and never know how many miles they are going to get, the self-employed that their business income varies from season to season, and the list could go on.
Trying to manage your finances with a steady income is hard enough but when you never know what your paycheck will be seems almost impossible, but it?s not. It is, however, going to be a little more tricky.
In my Budget and Bill Organizer I talk about averaging your expenses like your phone and electric bills that vary from month to month. The same principle can be used to average your income.
The first step you need to take is to find records of your pay for as far back as you can. It would be best if you had records going back for at least 6 months.
Take these records and total the amounts you were paid for the entire period. Then divide that by the number of months you have records for. This will give you your average monthly income.
If you don?t have any record of your previous pay you may need to go to your employer to get the information. If there is no way to get this information you should start a log of how much you get paid and use this to develop your budget.
Once you have determined your average monthly income you will need to develop your budget just as if this was your regular pay.
Here?s where it gets tricky. You aren?t always going make the amount you have budgeted. The only way to handle this is to save when you make more than what you have budgeted.
Here?s an example:
You have determined that your monthly budget is $2000 per month;
In January you earn $2500. You will need to put away $500 of that money so that you can make up for any month that your income falls below $2000.
This sounds like a simple solution to a complex problem but it may not be as easy as it sounds unless you accustomed to saving money. It will take some discipline to make sure that money is there when you need it.
There could be a bright side to this method. If you are able to put the extra money away and you have several months that you make more than your budget you could end up with a sizable savings account.
When setting up your budget make sure that you don?t underestimate your bills and expenses. This is one of the major reasons many budgets fail.
By averaging your income it will prevent the ?Feast to Famine? approach to your spending. It only makes sense to spread your income out so that you can cover all of your bills and expenses every month.

Sub-area map of Buckley Annex at Lowry.
Lowry is about to grow by 80 acres and 800 residential units.
The Lowry Redevelopment Authority board has approved an Economic Development Conveyance for the Buckley Annex property, bordered by Monaco Parkway, First Avenue, Quebec and Bayaud streets. The Air Force is expected to transfer the deed in the next few weeks.
The 70-acre Buckley Annex property is the last remaining parcel of land to be transferred by the Department of Defense to the LRA.
It is one of the largest infill sites in Denver. Established in the 1970s, the Buckley Annex contained the Denver Center of the Defense Finance and Accounting Services and the Air Reserve Personnel Center with some 3,000 employees. It was announced for closure in 2005 and the property was completely vacated on Sept. 15, 2011.
Net-Zero possibility
As earlier reported by InsideRealEstateNews, the LRA is working with Denver?s Office of Economic Development on a ?net-zero neighborhood? concept. Under that concept, the neighborhood would generate as much energy as it utilizes on an annual basis. Net zero is achieved through a combination of energy-efficient building standards along with renewable energy technologies such as solar or geothermal power. Energy credits from off-site systems may also be utilized.
?This kind of vibrant mixed-use neighborhood is what makes Denver one of the most innovative and sustainable cities in America,? said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock.
Rendering of Townhome Boulevard in new 80-acre Buckley Annex coming to Lowry.
?District 5 is truly on the move,? said Denver City Councilwoman Mary Beth Susman. ?Major developments like this and Ninth and Colorado will soon create new jobs, amenities and a mix of housing choices for area residents.?
The LRA will accept the property at no initial cost, but net profits, after all development costs and financing are paid off, will be shared with the Air Force. The negotiated agreement recognizes the high initial costs, such as demolition and obsolete utilities, associated with the redevelopment of a military installation. The LRA will pay for approximately $45 million in development costs through land sales, traditional bank loans, tax increment financing and federal grants.
The Lowry Redevelopment Authority conducted a public redevelopment planning process in 2007-8 involving numerous community task forces and stakeholder groups. The LRA will be the master developer of the site, as it has for the rest of Lowry, and will sell land to residential and commercial developers for vertical construction.
The conceptual redevelopment plan calls for:
?This will be an exciting new neighborhood for Lowry and Denver,? said Monty Force, incoming executive director for the Lowry Redevelopment Authority. ?Where else can you live in a new green home, perhaps a ?right-sized? one, with new amenities at Lowry and easy access to Crestmoor Park and Cherry Creek??
In the coming months, the LRA will create a General Development Plan and zoning package based on the Buckley Annex Redevelopment Plan. Building demolition and infrastructure improvements are currently scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year. At full buildout, the development is projected to create approximately $1 million annually in new property taxes and nearly $500,000 annually in sales taxes. The project is expected to create 350 construction jobs at the peak of construction and 400 retail and office jobs at full buildout.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology along with Australian colleagues, have examined corals from the Great Barrier Reef affected by the Black Band Disease and identified the critical parameters that allow this prevalent disease to cause wide mortality of corals around the world. Corals infected with Black Band show a characteristic appearance of healthy tissue displaced by a dark front, the so called Black Band, which leaves the white limestone skeleton of the coral animal exposed. The dark front is commonly one to two centimetres broad and consists of a complex microbial community among which there are phototrophic cyanobacteria, sulfur oxidizing bacteria and sulfate reducing microorganisms.
The corals and their endosymbiotic algae are struck by three stress factors at once: toxic sulfide, anoxia, and a low pH at the boundary of the bacterial mat and the coral tissue.
The scientists investigated the tissue lesions with microsensors for oxygen, sulfide and pH. These microprobes have a tip diameter in the micrometre range and allow the scientists to measure highly resolved depth profiles in the coral tissue. They identified big differences between infected tissue and tissue in the preliminary stage of the disease: "In diseased coral tissue two zones develop: A phototrophic zone at the top in which the cyanobacteria produce oxygen and a lower anoxic zone in which the bacteria degrade the necrotic coral tissue. Sulfide is formed in the degradation process," Martin Glas of the Max Planck Institute in Bremen explains the results. "In tissue that is only slightly infected the zonation is not nearly that strong. Usually we could not detect sulfide, and oxygen penetrated deep into the bacterial mat."
At the front of the dark zone the conditions are particularly detrimental for the corals. The increased sulfide concentration around the necrosing tissue and the resulting decrease in oxygen leads to the spreading of the lesions to the surrounding, healthy tissue; a positive feedback that causes rapid migration of the Black Band Disease.
"We assume that the biogeochemical conditions at the surface of the coral tissue are responsible for the fast spreading of the disease. The higher the sulfide concentrations are and the less oxygen there is, the faster the dark front is migrating," Martin Glas describes the causes for the origin and the high virulence of the disease. So far, at least, the scientists have not identified a pathogen that could be responsible for the necrosis of the coral tissue. "Our measurements show that the Black Band Disease can migrate at one centimetre per day in the summer months. At this speed, within a very short time, whole coral colonies can die and the population size of many coral species on the reef can number of species in the reef can drastically decline," says Martin Glas.
For several years, David Bourne of the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville and his colleague Yui Sato have been performing monitoring programs on the condition of coral reefs in which they also examined the coral diseases in the Great Barrier Reef. David Bourne says: ?Presumably the Black Band Disease is one of the most frequently reported diseases in tropical reefs. One major cause is the seasonally high water temperature. Thus, results from this study allow us to understand at the micro-scale how the environmental conditions and the complex microbial community interact to result in the onset and progression of this coral disease."
Is there any cure for the reefs? "If the temperature decreases in winter the disease is stagnant. However, with increasing frequency the disease recurs in the next year. The bare coral skeleton can be overgrown by new polyps. But this may take many years," as Yui Sato of the James Cook University states.

(Reuters) - The director of a video calling for the arrest of fugitive Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony suffered from a brief psychosis when he was hospitalized last week in California, the filmmaker's wife said on Wednesday, the same day an anti-Kony resolution came before the U.S. Senate.
Jason Russell, who directed the 30-minute "Kony 2012" Internet film that went viral earlier this month, was detained by police in San Diego last week after witnesses reported a man in "various stages of undress" who was "acting bizarrely, running into traffic" in public, police said.
"Jason's incident was in no way the result of drugs or alcohol in his body. The preliminary diagnosis he received is called brief reactive psychosis, an acute state brought on by extreme exhaustion, stress and dehydration," Russell's wife, Danica, said in a statement.
The "Kony 2012" film became an Internet sensation this month, racking up more than 84 million hits on YouTube since it was posted and thrusting its director into the spotlight.
The video's aim was to wake up the world to the atrocities committed by Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, including kidnapping children and forcing them to fight.
On Wednesday, a bipartisan group of 33 U.S. senators introduced a resolution condemning Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army for crimes against humanity and supporting efforts to remove him from the battlefield.
"Joseph Kony represents the worst of mankind, and he and his commanders must be held accountable for their war crimes. Today, one-third of the United States Senate has joined me in condemning the LRA's unconscionable crimes against humanity," said Chris Coons, a democrat from Delaware who led the resolution alongside Senator Jim Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican.
U.S. officials had already taken actions aimed at stopping Kony before Russell's video hit the Web. In October 2011, President Barack Obama notified Congress that he had authorized about 100 combat-equipped U.S. forces to deploy to central Africa to help government forces battling Kony.
VIDEO CAME UNDER CRITICISM
The phenomenal success of Russell's video has been hailed for inspiring young people to activism, but has suffered some criticism including that it oversimplified a long-standing human rights crisis.
Russell was not arrested following what his organization has called an "unfortunate incident," but officers transported him to a medical facility and he was treated for "exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition."
"The doctors say this is a common experience given the great mental, emotional and physical shock his body has gone through in these last two weeks," Russell's wife said.
Russell will continue to remain under hospital care for a number of weeks, and his wife said the recovery process "could take months" before the director is able to resume his work with Invisible Children.
Russell, who narrates the Kony video with a personal story that juxtaposes shots of his young son in San Diego with the hopelessness of Ugandan children, has said the video was meant as a kick-starter to a complicated issue.
A host of celebrities, including George Clooney, Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Oprah have joined the virtual chorus of support for the cause.
Mixed reactions in Uganda include criticism that the attention came too late, that much of the armed conflict in the area has subsided and the film leaves out that the Ugandan military is often accused of committing the same atrocities as Kony's fighters. In addition, Kony is believed to have long since fled Uganda and now only commands a few hundred followers.
Invisible Children also has faced questions about its governance in light of financial statements showing a large proportion of funds were used for travel and film production rather than charity work.

Generally, the first part of finding the right unit such as central versus window units or otherwise, is to truly consider how often you'll be using your cooling system and the size of your house. You'll also want to keep in mind what rooms you'll be using most often, or if you're the type who sticks to one part of the house, condo or apartment.
It's also a good idea to make sure you know the difference or benefits that some types of air conditioning may have over others. For instance, swamp coolers may do well in certain locations, but generally not ones that bear low humidity. Window units are ideal for those who have a small space to cool, but they can also be loud, unsightly and often expensive to run for long periods of time.
Many people tend to get intimidated by the idea of having central heating and cooling installed into their home, often due to the costs involved, time and the idea of added inconvenience when it's being installed. However, having central units installed cannot only potentially save you money and make the entire home more comfortable, but it can also add value to the home, itself.
There are a few different kinds of heating and cooling installation types, but one of the more common ones is referred to as a heat pump. A heat pump will give warm air during the winter and then reverses it in the warmer seasons, turning it into cooler air. Often enough, heat pumps require that more than one unit to get the job done.
When considering a central unit, it's also important to think about more than just the size of your home and the amount or type of units that will be needed. You also need to consider the type of resources that the unit will run off, whether it's entirely electrical, part gas and so forth in order to determine future costs to run it.
Due to how complex it can be when installing units, it's often recommended to avoid doing so on your own or through someone local who just happens to be handy at fixing things. This generally because there are a lot of pipes, vents and ductwork involved that can truly determine the overall efficiency of your cooling and heating. Doing it on your own or hiring on someone who lacks proper experience may actually wind up costing you more in the end.
If you're unsure about what type of heating and air conditioner units or options are best for your particular living conditions, then it's often a good idea to get recommendations or consultations from a professional. This is also a great time to ask other questions such as how much certain units will cost to run on a regularly or even annual basis, as well as what's general the most efficient energy-wise.

DENVER (AP) ? John Elway flashed that mile-wide grin and turned the microphone over to his new quarterback, Peyton Manning.
Talk about a powerful pair.
Introducing Manning as the newest Denver Bronco on Tuesday, the two Super Bowl winners each talked about hoisting another Lombardi Trophy, this time together. And soon.
"I realize I don't have 14 years left, by any means," Manning said. "This isn't something where I'm just building a foundation to do something in two years or three years. This is a 'now' situation. We're going to do whatever we can to win right now. That's all I'm thinking about right now."
Just so long as Manning's surgically repaired neck goes along with the plan.
Neither he nor Elway has a doubt it will, and the Hall of Famer-turned-executive knew the NFL's only four-time MVP was just what his club needed.
The franchise has won just two playoff games since Elway's career came to an end with a second straight Super Bowl triumph in 1999.
Denver's last playoff victory came over Pittsburgh two months ago, when Tim Tebow delivered a stadium-rocking, 80-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime.
But things change, and in the NFL, they can change fast. Tebowmania is now a passing fad in Denver.
A couple of photos of Tebow that once adorned the halls at the Broncos' headquarters were gone Tuesday by the time Manning was introduced.
"I believe that he's got a lot of great football left in him," Elway said of his new QB. And if that's true, the Broncos will wind up paying him $96 million over five years under his new deal.
After holding up his new, bright orange jersey in a photo op with Elway and owner Pat Bowlen, Manning answered many of the questions that have been bouncing around since March 7, when his old team, the Colts, released him to avoid paying a $28 million bonus and set in motion one of the most frenetic free-agent pursuits in history.
The first issue on everyone's mind: So, Peyton, how do you feel?
"I'm not where I want to be. I want to be where I was before I was injured," Manning said, referring to the neck problem that kept him off the field in 2011 after he'd started every game for the Colts for the previous 13 seasons. "I have a lot of work to do in getting to where I want to be from a health standpoint and learning this offense. This is going to take a ton of work."
As far as being the man who could bring about the end of Tebow's stay in Denver, Manning said: "I know what kind of player Tim Tebow is, what kind of person he is ... and what an awesome year he had this year. If Tim Tebow is here next year, I'm going to be the best teammate I can be to him, he and I are going to help this team win games. If other opportunities present themselves to him, I'm going to wish him the best."
On Elway's role in leading him to choose Denver over other suitors, the most serious of which were the Titans and 49ers: "Everyone knows what kind of competitor he is as a player. I can tell he's just as competitive in this new role. That got me excited."
And so, the deal ? the club's most dramatic since Elway was acquired from the Colts in 1983 ? was sealed.
With the new contract in place, Manning plans to retire in Denver. The Broncos, meanwhile, have some protection in the way the deal was formulated. There's no signing bonus. Manning will get $18 million guaranteed for next season, but must pass a physical before each season, starting in 2013, to get paid.
"I don't consider it much of a risk, knowing Peyton Manning," Elway said. "I asked him, 'Is there any doubt in your mind that you can't get back to the Peyton Manning we know of?' And he said, 'There's no doubt in my mind.'"
Elway's move to the front office last year set off a whirlwind of activity that landed the Broncos in the playoffs. But the old QB is in this to win Super Bowls and he's throwing his hat in with Manning, the 50,000-yard passer who redefined the quarterback position through the 2000s, not Tebow ? who seems most comfortable carrying and not throwing the ball.
"Tim Tebow's a great kid. If I want someone to marry my daughter, it's him," Elway said.
But to run an NFL offense, to get a title, he wanted Manning.
"My goal is to make Peyton Manning the best quarterback that's ever played the game," Elway said, "and he's got that ability with the football that he's got left.
"He's a guy that raises all boats. He's already made (his teammates) better, and they haven't met him yet just because of the type of person he is, his reputation and what he's done in this league. So, he's just going to have a tremendous effect on the Denver Broncos."
Manning, who turns 36 on Saturday, said he made a quick connection with Elway, who won his two Super Bowls in Denver after his 37th birthday. Since No. 7's retirement, a long string of 11 quarterbacks have come to Denver, trying in vain to replace the irreplaceable. If anyone can get out of that shadow, Manning could be the man.
He's got two trips to the Super Bowl and one title, 11 Pro Bowls and was the fastest player to reach 50,000 yards and 4,000 completions. His first TD toss for Denver will be his 400th.
Manning's familiar No. 18 was actually retired ? a tribute to Denver's first quarterback, Frank Tripucka. But Tripucka was more than happy to let Manning bring it out of mothballs.
The new face of the Broncos stressed that he was ready to work and was planning to stay in town to do so.
Manning even picked up a playbook Tuesday, but the offense crafted for and by him will be drastically changed from the option-heavy one that Tebow ran in Denver last season. And coaches can't answer any questions Manning might have until April 16, when offseason programs can begin around the league and he'll finally be able to work out at Broncos headquarters.
Still, it's expected he'll be able to run his kind of offense in Denver. Coach John Fox said he can't wait to pair that no-huddle approach with Denver's altitude for a double-whammy on defenses.
One other factor in Manning's decision to play outdoors in the Mile High City: The nearly $40 million in salary cap room the Broncos have, putting them in the mix for quality free agents, possibly including Manning's former teammates Jeff Saturday and Dallas Clark.
The status of Manning's neck, however, will be an ongoing issue. It's one thing to throw through the entire route tree on a practice field, which he did to pretty much everyone's satisfaction, quite another to take a blindside hit from a 300-pound defender, which hasn't happened since he was surgically repaired.
"There's no question I have work to do," Manning said. "I've been very open with the Broncos, really all the teams, about my medical history, about where I am, about how I feel. I really let them tell me. I've put all the cards out on the table, working out for three teams, going through my entire medical history, not just this past year. I couldn't sell myself when it came to that. I had to let them tell me and decide this was something they wanted to do."
Elway, general manager Brian Xanders and Fox all said the goal is for Manning to start the Broncos' first exhibition game in August. That's Manning's desire, too.
"I want to be out there every single snap," Manning said. "Every single play."

A 400-pound adult male gorilla escaped his cage a the Buffalo zoo ? and is on the run!
The gorilla bit a female zookeeper before being tranquilized and then made a run for it. ??He was out of the zoo before we could even respond,? said zookeeper Angus Johnson.
Zoo officials said Koga, a 24-year-old silverback gorilla at Buffalo Zoo, ?took advantage of an unlocked door in his living quarters ?and slipped into the space behind it, which is used by zoo personnel but closed to the public. ?Sources close to the zoo, say that it looked like a planned breakout.
A keeper who has cared for Koga since he arrived in 2007 was bitten on her hand and calf.
The gorilla apparently hid in a large drainpipe for a few hours, then went running through the streets of Buffalo.
After it happened, the keeper, whose name was not released, took refuge inside the habitat of a female gorilla and her newborn baby. The keeper had a good relationship with the mother who, like Koga, is a West Lowland gorilla, native to West Africa and the Congo River Basin. ?The female gorilla put her arm around the zookeeper ? kept her calm.
Meanwhile, police sent in the SWAT team to secure the area while a veterinarian handed out ?handheld blow pipes to his team ? in hopes of sedating Koga.
Buffalo citizens were ordered to lock their doors.
?After five hours of running through the streets ? and apparently singing nursery rhymes at the top of his lungs ? Koga was hit by a barrage of blow darts and ? was taken in.
?That was the scariest thing I?ve ever done in my career,? said SWAT team captain Mark Maraschiello.
?It?s a 400 pound animal that?s capable of who knows what. He could rip your arm out of its socket,? Maraschiello said.
The sedated gorilla was dragged back to the zoo ?once the drugs took hold, which was about 15 minutes after they were administered.
The keeper?s decision to lock herself inside the separate habitat likely kept her from being further harmed, according to officials at the zoo.
The Buffalo police promise an investigation into how Koga escaped and Koga will be put into solitary confinement until they finish their investigation.
The wounded zookeeper was undergoing an evaluation at a nearby hospital but her injuries were not considered serious.
Koga was born at the Bronx Zoo in New York City and transferred in 1994 to the Memphis Zoo before landing in Buffalo. He has no history of unusual aggression.
Isn?t he cute?
